After playing TAC Cup for North Ballarat, Notting was drafted to Brisbane in 1996 and made his debut in 1998. He was a member of the Lions' 2001 and 2002 premiership sides, but was an emergency in 2003 and missed out on the club's third straight flag. Notting bounced back in 2005, playing every game and kicking a career-high 30 goals. He retired at the end of 2009, having played 208 games for Brisbane.

Notting played for Labrador between 2010 and 2012.
