The Swan Districts Football Club was formed in 1932 and joined the West Australian National Football League in 1934, acting as a successor to the defunct Midland Junction Football Club in the Perth Hills and Swan Valley region. The club was based at Bassendean Oval in the suburb of Bassendean. Swans were competitive in their early years but took until 1961 to win their first flag. After appointing Haydn Bunton Junior as captain-coach following a wooden-spoon finish in 1960, Bunton led the club to a hat-trick of premierships in 1961-62-63. The club repeated that feat in 1982-83-84 under John Todd, and has a total of eight premierships.
The club's city zone includes the eastern and north-eastern suburbs of Perth such as Bassendean, Midland and Gosnells up into the Swan Valley, and the hills region including Mundaring, Kalamunda and Lesmurdie. Its country zone includes Tom Price, Newman, Karratha and Port Hedland, as well as Bunbury
Champions at Swan Districts[]
Bill Walker[]
The New Zealand-born Bill Walker played a record 305 games for Swan Districts between 1961 and 1976. The tough rover played in premierships in his first three seasons and won the Sandover Medal as the league's best player in 1965, 1966 and 1967. He was retrospectively awarded a fourth Sandover for 1970 after originally being declared to have lost on a countback, making him the only player to win the medal four times. Walker acted as captain-coach of Swan Districts between 1969 and 1971, and after giving up his coaching duties remained as captain until 1975. After retiring, Walker served on Swan Districts' board, including acting as President from 1983 to 1995. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
