The Subiaco Football Club was formed in 1896 and joined the West Australian Football Association (now the WAFL) in 1901. The club initially struggled, winning only 11 games in their first seven seasons, but improved to win their first premiership in 1912 and added two more in the next three seasons. After winning a fourth flag in 1924, Subiaco struggled through a lengthy lean period, going nearly half a century without a premiership and in particular spent most of the decade post World War II at the foot of the ladder. The Lions broke out of the doldrums with their fifth premiership in 1973 before another decade of poor on-field results during which they "won" four wooden spoons. In the mid-1980s Subi rebounded to win flags in 1986 and 1988 but were greatly affected by the arrival of the West Coast Eagles, losing a number of quality players to the then-VFL side as well as, eventually, their home ground Subiaco Oval. The Lions shifted to Leederville Oval in 2004, which coincided with the club's greatest period of dominance as they won four premierships between 2004 and 2008.
The club's city zone includes the inner north-western suburbs of Perth such as Karrinyup, Carine and Sorrento, while its country zone includes Kalgoorlie, Boulder and Esperance.
