No 6, 2001 AFL Pre-Season Draft
Stephen Tingay (born 13 August 1970) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the AFL.
Originally from Shepparton, Tingay was drafted by Melbourne in 1987 and made his debut in the opening round of 1989, playing 12 games for the year. He became a regular in 1990, playing all 24 games, followed by 15 in 1991. Given Robert Flower's number 2 jumper in 1992, Tingay missed most of that year with injury but bounced back to play 20 games in 1993 before a stellar 1994 in which he was named All-Australian and finished runner-up behind captain Garry Lyon in Melbourne's best and fairest count. He was made a vice-captain in 1995, and named Best Clubman in 1996 before missing most of 1997 through injury.
Tingay played 15 games during 1998, including his 150th game in the final round of the home and away season. He played the first nine games of 1999 before missing the rest of the year with hip and hamstring injuries, complications from which prevented from playing in 2000. Delisted at the end of that season after 162 games, Tingay trained with West Coast before being picked up by Sydney in the pre-season draft. He did not play a senior game for the Swans, suffering a severe hamstring injury that forced his retirement midway through the season.
