Founded in 1859, the Melbourne Football Club is the oldest club in the AFL. It was a foundation member of the Victorian Football League in 1897, and has won 3 premierships including 5 in 6 years between 1955 and 1960. The Demons' last premiership was in 1964, which represents the second-longest current flag drought of any side. During that time the club hit dire financial straits and came close to a merger with Hawthorn in 1996, but has since had a recovery off field, although its on-field results since 2006 have been extremely poor.
