No 1, 1998 AFL National Draft

Des Headland (born 21 January 1981) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for Brisbane and Fremantle in the AFL and Subiaco in the WAFL.

An outstanding junior with Subiaco, Headland was the first pick in the 1998 national draft. He made his debut midway through the 1999 season and played three games for the year, adding another nine games the following season including the Lions' two finals. Given Richard Champion's number 1 guernsey in 2001, he played 20 games during the home-and-away season but lost his spot for the finals and was an emergency for Brisbane's historic Grand Final win. Headland bounced back in 2002, kicking a career-high 34 goals and playing in the Lions' premiership side.

After the 2002 grand final, Headland requested a trade home to WA and was dealt to Fremantle in return for the Dockers' first two draft picks, as part of a larger trade involving Fremantle's Adam McPhee and Brisbane's Damian Cupido joining Essendon and Bomber Blake Caracella shifting to Brisbane. Headland played 92 games in his first five seasons with Fremantle, but managed just 20 games over the next three years. He retired at the end of 2010, after 112 games for Fremantle and 52 for Brisbane.

Headland played on for Subiaco for two more seasons.
