From the papers[]

The Age[]

"With their backs to the wall, the Eagles lifted. Todd Breman kicked a long goal and seconds later centre half-back Geoff Miles followed up with another.

Miles, mindful of the seconds ticking away, then sprinted back to guard Melbourne's Danny Hughes. As the ball went forward for the Eagles again, the two of them moved downfield towards it, making up enough position for Miles to take a spectacular mark.

Sixty metres from goal, he played on, only to see Hughes smother his kick. And then the siren sounded."

Canberra Times[]

"Ruckman Jim Styncs dominated the centre bounce-downs and also showed his worth by gathering 18 kicks.

Wingman Steven Stretch lowered hiscolours to Chris Mainwaring in the first half but he came out firing in the second.

His 18-kick second-half performance combined with the superb final quarter by Spalding was the difference.

The Eagles, who led by 14 points at three-quarter-time, were dejected as they left the ficld but they can take heart."
